CAMP BONDSTEEL, Kosovo – Amy Anderson, a resident of Columbia, Mo., was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel at a ceremony on Camp Bondsteel by the Multi-National Task Force East commander, Brig. Gen. Larry D. Kay.

Anderson was commissioned when she graduated in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in general engineering, with a major in Foreign Area Studies of Western Europe from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Anderson is currently on deployment with the Kansas City-based 110th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, in support of the NATO-led peace keeping mission in Kosovo.

She works as the G-3 - Chief of Operations officer for the task force - where she oversees day-to-day operations and training within MNTF-E headquarters. Anderson knew that she'd be promoted; she had no idea just how soon.

"We had put the paper work in, and knew it had been approved, I just didn't know when it would happen," she said with little surprise.

It was the support of fellow service members when she arrived in Kosovo however that came as a welcomed surprise.

"Everyone kept asking me, 'When are you getting your 0-5, when are you getting your 0-5?'" said Anderson, referring to those who kept asking her how soon would it be before she was pinning on lieutenant colonel rank. "I told them, I'm a major, and that's the way it is."

Transitioning into the G-3 Chief of Operations position allowed for the promotion.

Anderson served on active duty and later enlisted in the Missouri National Guard where she works full-time as the Plans and Programs branch manager at state headquarters in Jefferson City, Mo. Her military career spans 19 years. This is her third deployment and her second time serving in Kosovo.

Anderson and her husband Brad are longtime residents of the central Missouri area , and they have three daughters, Ashley, 15, Allison, 12 and Amanda, 8. Her parents, Derril and Ethelene Munson, have lifelong ties to Crane, Mo. and currently reside in Columbia, Mo.

MNTF-E operates under the flag of the Army National Guard's 110th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, the first non-divisional unit to assume the leadership role for the mission, and is part of the larger NATO-led international force known as the Kosovo Force. KFOR is responsible for maintaining peace and security in Kosovo.

Anderson, who deployed along with over a 1,000 other Missouri National Guard Soldiers, is expected to return to the U.S. sometime in March 2009.

Kosovo Forces 10, Multi-National Task Force East, is the 16th rotation of U.S. forces in Kosovo since 1999 - when the organization entered Kosovo under the United Nations mandate - two days after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

United States forces include the 110th MEB, along with National Guard and Army Reserve units from seven states, the Air Force, the regular Army and civilian contractors. Units from Armenia, Greece, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Ukraine form the international portion of the Task Force. Brig. Gen. Larry D. Kay commands MNTF-E as the senior Army Commander in the Balkans region.
