HORSHAM AIR GUARD STATION, Pa. – A room crowded with Guardsmen and civilians witnessed the arrival of the 201st Rapid Engineer Deployable, Heavy Operational Repair Squadron, Engineer (RED HORSE) Squadron, Det. 1’s newest and long-awaited chief master sergeant here March, 12.
An embodiment of the Air Force Core Values, Chief Master Sgt. John Heidrick, 201st RHS, Det. 1 logistics superintendent, officially donned the top chevron of the enlisted Air Force rank during his promotion ceremony held during this month’s drill.
“It’s a great feeling,” said Heidrick. “Now I’m in a position where I can use this platform to let everyone know what RED HORSE is about; we do so much and I want everyone to hear that message.”
Heidrick’s humble demeanor conceals the feats he’s accomplished during his time with the 111th Attack Wing here – his involvement to volunteer work, leadership of the Wing’s honor guard and as a dynamo of esprit de corps.
He spent 27 years in the 270th Engineering Installation Squadron and 111th Logistics Readiness Squadron here before exchanging his patrol cap for the iconic red hat of a RED HORSE Airman. With 28 years in armed service, all have been in the Pa. Air National Guard. He stated that while with the 111th ATKW, he’s fostered camaraderie, a strong military family and opportunities to provide military service on many occasions – all virtues he intends on continuing in his new position.
Having earned numerous accolades and awards throughout his profession, the chief master sergeant said, “I’ve been surrounded by a lot of great people in my career. And it’s not about me anymore; it’s about everybody else.
“Now I’m looking to give others the chance to be in the limelight and give them the opportunities that I had – not force them, but give them the opportunity.”
He explained his commitment to sacrifice for Guardsmen, to provide what they need for job success and what they need to accomplish personal growth. That approach has already inspired other Air Guardsmen, specifically his daughter Staff Sgt. Rebecca Heidrick, who originates from the 111th ATKW, but is currently with the Air National Guard Diversity Office Administration at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland.
She said that becoming a chief master sergeant is one of her career goals.
Support for Heidrick’s achievement was displayed by both the number of attendees at the event and their echoing of his promotion being a highly-anticipated occasion.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Rebecca. “He cares about the mission, he cares about getting things done, but he also cares about the people. Honestly, he really worked hard; he was born to be a chief.”
