During the San Jacinto’s port visit, the crew will march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, March 19.
“We are excited for this amazing opportunity,” said Capt. Dennis Velez, San Jacinto’s commanding officer. “We thank the people of Boston for welcoming us to their city, and for supporting the Navy, especially the sailors of USS San Jacinto during this port visit.”
The ship will be hosting tours for the USS Constitution museum staff, a local school and civic leaders to come aboard and learn about their ship. While the ship is giving the tours, part of the crew will be experiencing the Boston community.
“The significance of the Navy visiting Boston is steeped in naval tradition. The oldest active naval vessel in the fleet, USS Constitution resides in Boston,” said Command Master Chief Mario Rivers. “The importance of the visit is indicative of the citizens of Boston and their pride for the Navy and the tradition and pride for the Sailors.”
The crew of 400 plan to explore and experience the historical city the best way they know how.
“I am looking forward to eating authentic New England clam chowder,” said Logistic Specialist 1st Class Adam Jerasa.
San Jacinto was named after a critical battle in Texas, where the Mexican army was held off, and the local Texas militia was victorious. During Sam Houston’s pre-battle speech the slogan of the ship was coined, “Victory is Certain.”
San Jacinto is currently transiting the Atlantic Ocean, en route to participate in Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
