    Story by Capt. Cody Chiles

    U.S. Indo-Pacific Command

PANCHKHAL, Nepal — Senior peacekeeping leaders from the United Nations (U.N.) attended a regional seminar designed to develop capabilities and improve performance during peacekeeping operations at the Nepalese Army Headquarters and the Birendra Peace Operations Training Centre (BPOTC) March 31 – April 2.

During the seminar, Lt. Gen. Carlos Loitey, U.N. Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations, Office of Military Affairs, met with senior Nepalese Army officials, discussed the vital role Nepal plays in real-world U.N. peacekeeping operations and watched U.N. training at exercise Shanti Prayas III at the BPOTC.

The seminar’s goal was to promote greater understanding amongst current, future and potential Troop and Police Contributing Countries (T/PCCs) about a new U.N. readiness system and various new guidelines, policies and standards adopted by the U.N.

The U.N. Secretariat issued new U.N. Military Unit Manuals (UNMUMs) and an Operational Readiness Assurance Framework (ORA), including updated Comprehensive Pre-deployment Training Material (CPTM), to guide Member States’ deployment preparation.

Additionally, a newly established Peacekeeping Capabilities Readiness System (PCRS) was developed to address the requirement to generate troops and capabilities for short-notice deployments.

Regional training seminars are being conducted across the globe to socialize the new PCRS and new U.N. manuals, policies and standards.

During the seminar inauguration Nepalese Defense Minister Balkrishna Khand said the collective effort of nations is the only possible remedial step in addressing global issues and for this we must continue to pursue the utopian vision enshrined in the charter of United Nations.

He further added, “Nepal takes pride in being one of the reliable and leading troop contributing countries in peacekeeping operations. We have and always will respond to the call of the U.N. whenever needed.”

The seminar was held in conjunction with exercise Shanti Prayas III. Shanti Prayas is a multinational training exercise focused on peacekeeping operations. Co-sponsored by U.S. Pacific Command and the Nepalese Army, the exercise contributes to regional peacekeeping training capability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific by bolstering the capabilities and training capacity of participating nations at the BPOTC.
