SAN DIEGO -- An Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego instructor left the enlisted ranks and became a commissioned officer in a ceremony held at the USS Midway Museum, March 31.

A native of Portsmouth, Virginia and 2003 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Ensign Terrence Veverka has spent more than 12 years in the U.S. Navy as a cryptologic technician (technical), performing a variety of specialized duties associated with the collection and processing of airborne, shipborne and land-based radar signals.

Veverka decided to pursue becoming a limited duty officer (LDO), or “mustang,” in 2012 and was guided along the way by other LDOs.

“I wanted more responsibility with a bigger impact to affect policy,” said Veverka, with the goal in future assignments to improve knowledge in the fleet and further develop the information warfare mission.

LDOs are technical managers who fill leadership and management positions that require technical background and skills not attainable through normal development within other officer designators. The term "mustang" is slang for any officer who was a prior enlisted Sailor.

"I encourage everyone interested to apply," said Veverka about the LDO commissioning program. “You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

Since late 2015, Veverka has been applying his technical skills at IWTC San Diego as the Fleet Generic Area Limitations Environment (GALE) Operations course supervisor, leading six instructors delivering about 400 hours of instruction to more than 200 students. He became certified as a master training specialist in 2016 after demonstrating highly effective teaching skills and a comprehensive understanding of learning management, training administration and curriculum management.

He is also an information warfare team trainer instructor, helping ensure fleet-wide readiness and electronic warfare integration into signals intelligence operations for eight deploying carrier strike groups and amphibious readiness groups.

"One of the proudest traditions we have in the U.S. Navy is seeing our Sailors advance to the next pay grade, in this case as a mustang,” said Chief Cryptologic Technician (Technical) Christopher Love, an IWTC San Diego instructor and one of Veverka’s leading chief petty officers. “Nothing makes me prouder as a chief than seeing one of my Sailor’s hard work and dedication pay off and result in the accomplishment of being commissioned."

During the commissioning ceremony, Veverka was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

His past assignments include service with the National Security Agency/Central Security Service Georgia as an electronic intelligence analyst; Joint Analytic Center Molesworth as a maritime analyst; and aboard USS Gettysburg (CG 64) and USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), performing duties in support of electronic warfare.

Veverka also holds a Bachelor of Arts in international studies from American Public University.

IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel, preparing them to conduct Information Warfare (IW) across the full spectrum of military operations.
