WASHINGTON (NNS) – Spring is officially here and employees can fully enjoy the conveniences that the Washington Navy Yard Riverwalk has to offer.
“With the arrival of spring at the Washington Navy Yard, the Riverwalk will provide many tenant command employees, residents and guests with convenient access to Yards Park, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, numerous restaurants and other attractions in the fast developing neighborhood,” said Capt. Jeff Draeger, Naval Support Activity Washington (NSAW) commanding officer. “This publicly accessible narrow strip of Navy property also affords our neighbors and visitors to the District of Columbia an opportunity to enjoy the Riverwalk in its entirety while getting a waterfront look at this historic base known as the ‘Quarterdeck of the Navy.’”
The Washington Navy Yard Riverwalk opened on April 1, 2011, extending the Riverwalk’s use to employees, residents and visitors to the District. It was initially open on a limited basis, during normal business hours and when mission considerations allowed, and typically closed during Display Ship Barry events and other activities. Access was increased after waist gates (intermediate partitions) were added, and NSAW subsequently amended its policy, to keep the full length of the Riverwalk open continuously, with temporary exceptions to meet safety or operational requirements.
The portion of the Riverwalk that is part of the Navy Yard is about 2,000 feet long. It includes four pedestrian turnstiles for credentialed access to the base, in addition to the two end gates and two waist gates that enable partial or full closure when needed.
“The NSAW installation team coordinates with its mission partners to monitor the turnstiles’ performance and promptly address technical issues when they occur, as it does with other automated pedestrian entry points,” added Draeger. “Access instructions are located at each turnstile and instructional videos can be found on our NSAW Facebook page.”
With an eye toward increased spring use, NSAW has been making improvements to the Riverwalk, for the safety and enjoyment of those visiting or just passing by the Washington Navy Yard.
New “Walk Your Bike” signage has been added on each end to reinforce the posted NSAW policy which – for safety reasons – prohibits bike riding on the Navy Yard portion of the Riverwalk.
“Steel plates have been placed in areas where minor surface deterioration has occurred,” said Draeger. “And NSAW Port Operations personnel are sanding and repainting the bollards, cleats and other Riverwalk features to spruce up the storied Navy waterfront.”
Riverwalk users should note that NSAW may block or restrict access without notice for safety and operational reasons, though advanced notice of temporary closures is provided whenever possible.
Additionally, a common access card (CAC) is required to use the automated perimeter gates. Those without a CAC or who are unable to successfully use their CAC to access the Washington Navy Yard via the turnstiles will need to go to a manned entry checkpoint.
