U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John Uberti, the deputy commanding general of III Corps and Fort Hood, addressed the Soldiers of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment at a formation on Veterans Field March 28.

During his address, Uberti thanked the Soldiers in formation for their hard work and welcomed the regiment back to III Corps.

“It’s been the tradition in the modern Army that our cavalry regiments work directly for the corps that they are assigned to,” Uberti said. “Yesterday, we moved the 3rd Cav. Regt. back under III Corps so that when the corps commander has an important mission he can go right down to the most lethal formation in the corps.”

March 27 marked the official transition of the 3rd Cav. Regt. from 1st Cavalry Division to a III Corps direct reporting unit. For the last of couple years, the 3rd Cav. Regt. has been a part of the 1st Cav. Div. The division provided support to the 3rd Cav. Regt. through training opportunities and ensuring readiness of people and equipment, and that was proven by the job the regiment did both in Afghanistan and at home, Uberti said.

Approximately 1,200 Soldiers from the 3rd Cav. Regt. returned back to Fort Hood in February following a nine-month deployment in Afghanistan. Uberti thanked the Soldiers for their efforts there.

“My primary purpose for coming down here, really, was to say thank you,” Uberti said. “To express the thanks of everybody at III Corps for the incredible job you’ve done.”

Following Uberti’s address, Col. Kevin D. Admiral, the 3rd Cav. Regt. commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Bryan Barker, the 3rd Cav. Regt. command sergeant major, presented regimental awards to the top Soldiers in the regiment.

Awards were presented to the best Soldier, noncommissioned officer, warrant officer and junior officer of 2016. An award for best troop was also presented. The winners were announced in December 2016, during the deployment, but the presentation was delayed until all the soldiers returned from Afghanistan.

The regimental award winners are Pfc. Lynn Pharr, Sgt. 1st Class Carlos Casanova, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Luis Cartagena and Capt. C.J. McDonald. Additionally, Eagle Troop, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Cav. Regt. received the award for best troop.

All of the regimental awards have historical significance and are named after Medal of Honor Recipients that served with the 3rd Cav. Regt. during its 170-year history. In May, the regiment will host Brave Rifles Week to celebrate its 171st birthday.
