The Marines with 2nd LAR trained in an urban environment to prepare for an upcoming deployment.
“This is part of our pre-deployment work up,” said Lance Cpl. Daniel Lengford, an anti-tank missleman with 2nd LAR. “We’re just going through and getting refreshers on basic urban movements and learning some things that we may not have known before.”
Lengford said the first week of training was set in a classroom environment where they went through basic patrolling, basic urban movement and weapons handling. He mentioned that the classes were a good review since they were going over skills they learned during prior training courses.
The course provided many opportunities for Marines who needed to improve their skills and become more familiar with breaching buildings and conducting raids, especially for the newer Marines.
“I got a lot of new guys who just came from the company,” said Cpl. Gerald Martis, a squad leader with 2nd LAR. “For us to work together on the MOUT training alone was good.”
When the unit is deployed, they are required to perform a range of combined arms reconnaissance and security missions.
“A MOUT environment is one of the most dangerous things you can do, so it definitely needs to be one thing that we focus on,” said Martis.
The unit also focused on strengthening their teamwork capabilities as well as effective communication skills.
“Teamwork is pivotal in order to be successful in such a dynamic and kinetic environment,” said Martis. “Being able to communicate effectively will help save lives.”
2nd LAR will remain in the training area for the remainder of the week refining the skills needed for the unit to accomplish their mission in support of other infantry units.
