FORT STEWART, Ga.- “I was stressed out and my heart was pounding. Sweat protruded through my uniform as I walked through the door and saw a panel of five command sergeants major sitting before me.”
This is what Spc. Ryan Baur, a team leader with Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division said he felt when competing in the 2nd IBCT Soldier of the year competition March 16 at Fort Stewart, Ga.
Baur competed against seven other Soldiers throughout the brigade after winning the 3-15 Battalion Soldier of the Month board in November 2016.
“The physical part of the competition wasn’t too bad,” said Baur. “We took an Army physical fitness test, conducted expert infantry badge (EIB) lanes and completed medical and land navigation training.
“To me, the most stressful part was having to face five command sergeants major in the boardroom,” said Baur. “I knew that if I wanted to win this competition, I had to commit to studying during work and during my personal time.”
Baur said he memorized creeds, refined his infantrymen tasks skills, and trained extra hard during physical readiness training to prepare.
“It’s an honor to represent the unit and make them happy,” said Baur. “It’s also a really good bragging right and hopefully it plays out good in my career.”
Baur is scheduled to compete in the 3rd ID Soldier of the Year board Apr. 21, 2017 and hopes to positively represent the ‘Can Do’ Battalion with a win.
