SAN DIEGO (Mar. 24, 2017) – In today’s society, Millennials make up a significant portion of the civilian and naval workforce. Each new generation has the potential to bring about notable changes to the workforce with their modern-day views and work ethics; however, managing Sailors of this generation is the issue facing today’s leaders.
Sailors at Surface Warfare Medical Institute (SWMI) held training to strengthen the bonds between leadership and the Millennial Generation March 23.
As part of Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) Staff Education and Training Department’s 2016 initiative, a new training license was recently acquired. The strategic decision to purchase the license is aimed at better equipping today’s service members in professional leadership, influence and cross-training programs for both the Navy and its civilian counterparts.
The new resource license includes a course titled “Managing Millennials” which is being used to train personnel from NMCSD and Navy Region Southwest. The course covers a variety of topics, including defining generations, unique influences, and predicting future trends and practices that will ensure growth and adaptability with succeeding generations.
“I found the millennial training to be very informative,” said Lt.j.g. Jeremy Jackson, SWMI facilities and logistics department head. “It helped me to see the different views of those who aren’t in my current age group.”
Training took place over a two-day period for about 90 minutes each session. Both officers and enlisted personnel engaged in topics with Navy chaplain Lt. Jeremy Sweeten, the facilitator for the training.
“All of this information is important to a stable work environment and successful productivity,” said Sweeten. “When tensions take place within a company or institution, not only does job quality and output suffer, but a high turnover rate impedes morale and the entity’s longevity.”
After the training was complete, the SWMI staff left with the knowledge to bridge the generational gap.
“The millennial training was great,” said Lt. Cmdr. Gretchen Jackson. “Chaplain Sweeten is an outstanding facilitator, and I would recommend the course to anyone interested in learning more about not only the millennial generation, but the history of past generations.”
SWMI, a detachment of Navy Medicine Operational Training Center (NMOTC), is part of the Navy Medicine team, a global health care network of Navy medical professionals around the world who provide high-quality health care to more than one million eligible beneficiaries. Navy Medicine personnel deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ships, in the air, under the sea, and on the battlefield.
