FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELTA, Iraq – Friends and leaders of 511th Military Police Company gathered at Bunker 100 for a change-of-command ceremony, Aug. 28, 2008.
Capt. Eric Wigley, a native of Vicksburg, Miss., relinquished command to Capt. Jess Traver, of Reno, Nev.
"Standing in front of this formation 18 months ago, this day seemed an eternity away," Wigley told his company and an audience which included Maj. Gen. Michael Oates, Multi-National Division – Center commander; Command Sgt. Maj. James Redmore, MND-C command sergeant major; and Brig. Gen. Allawi of the Iraqi police.
The 511th MPs received their warning order to deploy to Iraq while training cadets at West Point during the summer of 2007 and deployed Nov. 11, 2007.
One platoon of the 511th MP Co. went to Camp Echo to work with Iraqi police in Qadasiyah province. The majority of the company works on and around Forward Operating Base Delta.
"In short, simply an outstanding list of accomplishments," said Lt. Col. Michael Blahovec, 793rd MP Battalion commander.
Blahovec added he is confident that with Traver in command, the company will continue to meet challenging times with success.
Traver told his new company they would continue three things.
"First, provide comfort and security to Iraqi civilians; second, training, mentorship and a strong partnership with our Iraqi police partners; and third, to those who would try to destroy the security that has been fought so hard to gain, to them, they get one thing from us – we will strike fear in to their hearts," said Traver.
At the end of the ceremony, Wigley received a certificate and gift from Allawi and Capt. Hayder Adnan Ali Al-Saidy, IP liaison to coalition forces, for the work they did together during Wigley's tour.
Wigley will return to Fort Drum to work with the 91st MP Battalion, which was Traver's previous assignment.
