The Brazilian Marine Corps Expeditionary Medical Unit conducted a bilateral exchange with U.S. Navy hospital corpsmen and Marines with 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 10-14.
The event primarily focused on observing and conducting tactical combat casualty care in order to strengthen cohesion and interoperability between the partner nations.
“The United States Marine Corps has a long history with the Brazilian Marine Corps dating back many years,” said U.S. Marine Capt. Thayne Stiefvater, the Brazil desk officer for Marine Corps Forces South. “We continue to build on the natural partnership of shared democratic values, and our shared interests in the Western Hemisphere.”
The partner nations worked together to share battlefield medical knowledge with each other, including techniques for applying a tourniquet, medical logistics capabilities, and proper care of battlefield casualties.
Brazilian Marine 2nd Lt. Orlando Vieira da Rocha said working with the U.S. military is important to strengthen ties between the two partner nations because both nations work as a whole to defend common values and interests, and the shared knowledge of combat medical care can help save lives in the future.
U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South is the Marine Corps component command for U.S. Southern Command, and is responsible for all Marine forces deployed to Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. Marines and sailors with MARFORSOUTH regularly conduct bilateral exchanges and theater security cooperation training with partner nations in the region, and are on standby to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in the event of an emergency.
