CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Six government employees were recently recognized for their long-standing commitment to supporting the military through their roles aboard Camp Pendleton in Facilities, Marine Corps Community Services, and Communications departments.
“We look at both military service time and civilian time,” said Jay Smith, the Labor Relations Officer at Civilian Human Resources aboard MCB Camp Pendleton. “A lot of the civilian employees we have are former military. It’s their comfort zone and where they flourish.”
The quarterly ceremony held April 25, recognized the honorees’ hard work, dedication, and their ability to improve the morale of those around them.
“They say the best way to find yourself is in the service of others,” said Brigadier General Kevin Killea, the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations-West. “When you’ve dedicated as many years as these gentlemen have, you discover where your passions truly lie.”
Alexander R. Abriol, a facilities operations specialist, and Edwardo Roldan, a telecommunications mechanic, were awarded for their 30 years of service.
“We have the core values and it just fits into their lives, so we’re recognizing people for that,” said Smith. “I think it’s good to remind them that their job really does count, and means something more than just ‘good enough for the government’.”
Edward Campos, an electrical engineering technician, Jerry L. Cole, a substance abuse program specialist, Richard Kirby, a maintenance mechanic, and Wayne C. Leblanc, a mechanical engineering technician, were all awarded for their 40 years of service.
Combined these honorees have devoted over 220 years of service.
“When presenting these awards, it’s humbling,” said Killea, the 29-year veteran, as he addressed the honorees sitting in the front row. “I’m not even qualified to sit here yet. I have to wait until next year.”
