Two Naval Undersea Medical Institute (NUMI) instructors were invited to attend and present at an annual symposium on March 24 in Secaucus, New Jersey.

The Beneath the Sea Science Symposium draws up to 1,500 people each year who have a vested interest in diving science and technologies.

Lt. Michael Parenteau and Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Thomas J. Friedman shared their expertise on responding to diving field emergencies. The audience included dive enthusiasts, medical personnel, scientists and researchers in the field of hyperbarics, and others interested in furthering safety within the diving community.

“I never knew how different the commercial and Navy safety equipment were,” Friedman said. “I’m glad the Navy provides us with everything we need to dive safely.”

Parenteau and Friedman presented to a crowd of about 30 people on how to use common emergency medical equipment available at a dive site and focused on both the U.S. Navy Diving Manual and the Association of Diving Contractors International manual. They then discussed with attendees how to handle field emergencies based on the results of research and clinical experience.

“Discussing the management of diving casualties with experts in the field makes diving safer for all,” said Parenteau. “There is great peace of mind in knowing what to do in the event of an emergency.”

NUMI provides training and technical expertise in undersea medicine, radiation health and related undersea matters in support of the warfighter. It falls under the command of Navy Medicine Operational Training Center (NMOTC), the global leader in operational medicine. NMOTC supports multiple commands throughout the country in training for operational medicine and aviation survival.
