CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan—Giving ‘on land and sea’ an environmental twist, volunteers from across Okinawa arrived ready to walk or dive along the seawall. Divers cleaned the ocean floor as others cleaned along walkways, volunteering to help the local community in more ways than one.
Members of the military community participated in cleanups held at the Miyagi Seawall on April 14 and Sunabe Seawall on April 22.
These sites are popular snorkeling and dive spots that see a lot of traffic.
“We come out to these dive sites and they’re really dirty, so it’s nice to be able to clean up our favorite sites,” said Russell Lemasters, a volunteer and dive instructor at Tsunami Scuba on Camp Foster. “It is opened to all divers which is a great way to build the relationship between the American and local dive community, and a good way to bring everyone together. This cleanup provides a service for the local community that otherwise probably wouldn’t be done.”
The military community across Okinawa hosts different cleanups, weekly and monthly, at several beaches, seawalls and bases. Service members volunteer their time in an effort to give back to the community.
“I wanted to make a difference in the community,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Lionel Oliver, Fleet Surgical Team 7. “I want to be out here in the community to see Okinawa. A lot of people were here, picking up a lot of trash. I think we made a difference, and it seems like the local residents notice and appreciate what we do.”
There are many volunteer opportunities for everyone who wants to make a difference and give back.
Marine Corps Community Services, Tsunami Scuba, the Single Marine Program and camp services host cleanups across Okinawa. Contact MCCS or Camp Services for beach cleanups, at Araha Beach, Uruma City Beach, Courtney Beach, and Kin Red Beach.
