Marines with 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion conducted their second annual sapper squad competition to test unit readiness at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 24-27, 2017.

The battalion had a squad from each of its four companies compete against each other in the four-day event that took the Marines through several exercises, testing them on their ability to plan and execute a course of action for combat situations.

“This entire exercise focuses on all different aspects of the division engineering field,” said Sgt. Isiah DeJesus, a squad leader with the battalion. “If you’re lacking in one area then you know you need to get more training in that area after the competition.”

Throughout the competition each squad participated in events including live fire exercises, urban breaching, assault breaching, patrols and more. During these exercises the leadership within the squads created the plan of execution, delivered the plan to their Marines and directed them while carrying out the course of action.

The Marines were graded and evaluated during the competition to improve future training as well as determine an overall winning squad. The winning squad will travel to California to compete against another winning squad from 1st CEB of Camp Pendleton, California.

“We are conducting the sapper competition to figure out who is essentially the best,” said Pfc. Joseph Riester, a combat engineer with the battalion. “It’s to figure out where the strengths and weaknesses lie, within not only our battalion, but also 1st CEB.”

Although this was a competition, the main focus of the event is to ensure the battalion is prepared for future deployments.

The training provides Marines the opportunity to step into leadership positions and learn different leadership styles and tactics from other Marines in the battalion who don’t often train together, said DeJesus.
