CAMP WILLIAMS, UTAH--Soldiers from the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade are supporting Cyber Shield 17 as the support staff for the operation, taking place April 24 to May 5, 2017 at Camp Williams, Utah.
The National Guard exercise in cooperation with the U.S. Army Reserve is designed to assess Soldier, airmen, and civilians on response plans to real-world cyber incidents.
The 228th TTSB based in Spartanburg, South Carolina, brought more than 30 guardsmen in support of CS17 as members of different sections of the joint staff.
The joint staff is providing human resources, command and control, and logistical support for the exercise.
Each year, the exercise staff and participants works together to adapt and improve the exercise for the upcoming year.
“This year is much better compared to last year in a lot of regards. We took what we learned from last year and perfected it,” said personnel officer Capt. Joseph Powell.
Cyber Shield 17 has brought together over 800 Soldiers, airmen and civilian participants from 44 states together to conduct defensive cyber operations, training, and assessment for Defensive Cyber Operations Elements, cybersecurity detachments or cells, and Cyber Protection Teams.
Participants will go head-to-head in a Red Cell “aggressor” versus Blue Team “defenders” practical exercise in defensive cyber security during the second week of the exercise.
“As this is my first experience being a part of the Cyber Shield exercise, this training event is a wonderful exercise that has been put together in efforts of securing our networks and building our information security for the upcoming years,” said 1st Sgt. Brice Engram, 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, Headquarters Company.
Engram provides logistical support for Cyber Shield 17 supplying the exercise with provisions to carry out the mission, to include over 1000 Computers, monitors, keyboards, and Mice. His logistical support extends to acquiring and maintaining over 30 buildings and working areas, transportation of over 10 vans, and office supplies.
Cyber Shield 17 is part of the National Guard’s ongoing effort to improve the guard’s readiness to respond to real-world cyber incidents. Some Soldiers seem pleased with the venue this year and the willingness of the Camp Williams’ staff in support of the mission.
“Utah is also a great venue,” said Powell. “Camp Williams is working with us to make Cyber Shield 2017 better than last year.”
South Carolina’s 228th TTSB has supported Cyber Shield as the joint staff for the last two years.
