OSLO, Norway – The 11th annual Conference of European Armies for Noncommissioned Officers kicked off here today. The three-day event, co-hosted by U.S. Army Europe and the Norwegian Army, brings together senior enlisted leaders from more than 34 European nations, the United States and Canada, to share ideas, lessons learned and best practices in building a stronger NCO Corps.
“This year was an opportunity for us to bring in new senior leaders who have recently taken positions,” said Command Sgt. Major Sheryl Lyon, the U.S. Army Europe’s senior enlisted advisor. “With all the transitions going on it shows the advancement of our partners' and allies' NCO Corps and it also gives them the opportunity to engage their peers and further enhance their abilities to work together.”
Lyon said this year’s conference theme ‘NCO: Leaders in Action is tied to the U.S. Army Europe's theme ‘Year of Execution.’
“The theme for the conference is NCO: Leaders in Action and its tied to the U.S. Army Europe’s ‘Year of Execution’ theme,” Lyon said. “That is because we have NCOs who make things happen…so the year of execution requires that our leaders be engaged in leading the way so that they are leaders in action.”
The CEANCO was created in 2006 as an army senior leadership conference but this year changed the dynamics of the topics to focus on the improvement and the growth of military personnel throughout the scope of operations across Europe.
"This year we included our sister services,” Lyon said. “We have here representatives from the Air Force, Marines and Navy…each of those entities will present throughout the conference and provide a different perspective of the U.S. Army mission.”
Everyone who participates as an allied partner has things they bring to the table, have contributions that they all make and so we all learn something from each other, Lyon said.
“This will be a great conference and we will all walk away as leaders in action,” said Lyon.
