WASHINGTON (NNS) – Naval Support Activity Washington (NSAW) partnered up with Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to conduct a joint active shooter exercise at the Washington Navy Yard, April 19.
The active shooter exercise, referred to as “RELIANT SHIELD 17-1,” was completed to meet a United States Fleet Forces Command requirement that all U.S. Navy personnel participate in an active shooter practical exercise annually. It provided an opportunity for NSAW to perform tactical level drill while at the same time incorporating essential coordination with all the tenant commands on the Washington Navy Yard.
“It is extremely valuable to do this training with our tenant commands and mutual aid partners,” said Capt. Jeff Draeger, NSAW commanding officer. “This type of collaborative drill enables us to exercise critical interoperability with MPD and other supporting agencies. We value our close working relationships on the base and with our many outside partners, and would like to thank all of them for their time and effort in supporting this important exercise.”
This was not the first time NSAW has teamed up with MPD on an active shooter drill. On October 19, 2014, MPD and NSAW conducted “District Shield” on a Sunday evening to exercise coordinated tactical training procedures while minimizing impact to the workforce.
This year’s drill, however, was conducted during a normal workday in order to exercise the relationships, communications and system improvements developed since 2013 under a more complex and inclusive test. For the NSAW incident management team and Emergency Operations Center, it was a valuable training opportunity that allowed them and Washington Navy Yard tenant commands to exercise their Emergency Action Plans.
“This drill gave us the opportunity to test our communication capabilities with our tenants and learn where we may need to improve our processes or the equipment and technology itself,” said Justin Petrick, installation emergency manager. “Any time we are able to have the entire base participate in this type of drill, the more secure and confident we are in communicating with and taking care of the workforce in the event of any type of emergency.”
A regularly scheduled exercise, RELIANT SHIELD 17-1 was not conducted in response to any specific threat.
