Twitter is a powerful social networking tool that can be used to follow brands, individuals, and help transitioning Soldiers find jobs.
Large companies interested in hiring new employees may have a specific social media handle they use to post job openings. By following these accounts, job seekers can receive opening updates as they are announced. Other companies post job openings on their business handle and often use hashtags to ensure that their tweets are searchable.
One of the most powerful ways to find open jobs is by searching for hashtags. Hashtags use the pound symbol on a keyboard (#) and are followed by a word or phrase with no spaces.
Some popular hashtags to use when searching for jobs include:
#job
#jobs
#hiring
#jobopening
#tweetmyjobs
#jobsearch
Hashtags are also helpful to narrow the job search down to a specific region. Cities and states have their own hashtag(s) that “tag” tweets to a region. For example, #NY will produce mostly tweets with hashtags associated with New York. Users can apply the same concept to cities, such as #Nashville, #Chicago, #Charlotte, #LA, etc.
Twitter has a feature where users can search for two hashtags at the same time. For example, if a job seekers is looking for a job in Washington, D.C., they could search #jobs and #DC together. This will produce a list of openings in that specific area by companies using both of those hashtags in the same tweet.
Twitter handles that post frequent jobs can be followed more closely by setting up notifications for every time the account posts. This will send users a Twitter notification every time the account tweets, including when they post job openings.
The Army’s Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program (SFL-TAP) has various Twitter accounts where transitioning Soldiers can receive updates on job postings in their area, hiring events, career and education advice, and information on the mandatory program all transitioning Soldiers must complete after at least 180 days of continuous active duty service.
