KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Sounds of construction filled the air, from the saws to the drills, proving that renovations were underway during the annual "roll-out" for the upcoming hurricane season in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands April 30-May 10.
Members of the 919th Special Operations Civil Engineering Squadron were requested to make the repairs and improvements to the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, Detachment 1 building, located at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in St. Croix.
"The repairs are being completed promptly, and they are doing good work," said Lt. Col. Erik B. Olsen, 53rd WRS pilot. "The facility is more than 20 years old and was in need of many repairs."
Some of the repairs that were being done included replacing the scissor gates, replacing the carpet in the offices, reworking the plumbing to prevent leaks, installing a water filtration system on the outside of the building, and updating the air conditioning units.
"We had to gut and completely rebuild the bathrooms after the hot water heater busted and the water leaks caused damage to the ceiling, walls and floors," said Chief Master Sgt. Michael Wieckowski, 919th SOCES operations flight superintendent. He had already seen the problems in the building first-hand while working in the recently closed 403rd CE squadron.
Wieckowski said that while rebuilding the bathrooms, the decision was made to completely move the hot water heater, so that if there were any future problems, the leaks would not damage the bathrooms and the damage to the structure would be minimized.
Olsen said that the repairs are coming along but future repairs are needed; one repair will include the replacement of the overhang, which covers the aerospace ground equipment that is used by maintenance to keep the aircraft serviceable and operational.
"This is what we do," said Wieckowski. "Hopefully, we will be requested to come back next year to complete the rebuild of the overhang."
