The 96th Civil Engineer Group’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal flight hosted the EOD Warfighter Challenge for the duration of the first week of May.
The challenge was a four-day, scenario based, multi-discipline skills exchange between 17 teams from all over the globe spanning nine different major commands.
This event was a new addition to the annual EOD Week festivities leading up to the EOD Memorial ceremony and the 49th EOD Warrior Foundation Ball.
Each team exercised 18 separate scenarios from real-world situations. Master Sgt. Adam Burke, 96th CEG EOD, and a small team planned the event that involved the construction of several life-like training facilities such as a post office, fruit stand, and combatant compounds.
“This is the first time we’ve done this (challenge) to this degree involving as many problems as we have,” said the Mississippi native. “We have already learned so much from our counterparts from the other bases.”
EOD technicians worked all 18 situations using their own techniques with the ultimate goal of the learning from their mistakes and establishing best practices for the individual scenarios.
Staff Sgt. Gideon Duke, 96th CEG EOD, was also a part of the organizing team and explained its importance.
“A big part of our career field is passing on knowledge and it takes a lot of work and practice to train for real-world situations,” said Duke. “In our occupation there is no replacement for hands on learning.”
Teams culminated their visit here with a “gear exchange” where they showcased different types of equipment used and best practices for use.
