CAMP ATTERBURY, IN— The Camp Atterbury Resilience Campus and Army Wellness Center provides free services to Soldiers, dependents, or anyone with a Department of Defense Common Access Card. This resource is available to all service members, including 81st Troop Command Soldiers currently conducting their Annual Training at Camp Atterbury.
The center offers detailed physical and mental health analysis as well as personalized plans for nutrition and fitness. This resource, which was made available by the Indiana National Guard and U.S. Army Medical Command in November 2016, has already made a positive impact on the lives of service members and their dependents.
Clients receive expert advice on achieving their personal goals, whether that means losing body fat, gaining muscle or decreasing their general stress levels.
“Everybody’s going to be a little bit different in terms of what they need,” said Logan Blackwell, one of the center’s health advisors. “That’s the benefit in having the one- on-one sit down time with the educators. We can look at their results and see where they might get the most bang for their buck by focusing on certain areas of nutrition or exercise.”
An Indiana National Guard Soldier’s free visit to the Camp Atterbury Resilience Campus and Wellness Center begins in the highly precise BodPod Composition Measurement Testing system, a pressurized container used to determine the Soldier’s body fat and lean body mass levels via air displacement technology. The Soldier then puts on a special mask that analyzes breathing patterns and heart rate, determining the Soldier’s daily energy expenditure. Next comes a fitness evaluation on a treadmill, in which health educators examine oxygen levels during exercise with varying levels of intensity.
Based on analysis from the testing, the Soldier is given customized expert advice to reach his or her individual health and fitness goals as quickly and safely as possible.
“We’ve seen good results from the people who have come back two or three times now,” Blackwell said. “We’ve seen a pretty good trend of people’s fitness increasing and body fat going down, for those trying to reach those goals.”
