BEMOWO PISKIE, Poland--U.S., Romanian and U.K. soldiers from Battle Group Poland were invited to the local Gen. Jozefa Bema middle school to enjoy a few games of soccer with fourth-grade students during a sports day in Bemowo Piskie.
Battle Group Poland arrived here in April as part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence, and ever since the soldiers of the multinational unit have been very active with the nearby communities. They’ve been putting on static displays of their equipment and participating in cultural events and sports days, all as a way to make the citizens aware of their presence and to learn about the battle group’s mission.
“I enjoy getting to do things with the people of Poland,” Pvt. Antonio Huerta said. “It makes me feel good that they are so welcoming to us.”
The parents and children at the school were excited to interact with the soldiers who are new to their small town. One parent at the games, Victoria Kozowska of Bemowo Piskie, said, “The people of Poland have been waiting a long time for NATO’s presence in Poland.”
Battle Group Poland, a multinational unit of U.S., U.K. and Romanian soldiers, is serving with Polish 15th Mechanized Brigade soldiers as a deterrence force in northeast Poland in support of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence.
