FORT STEWART, Ga. - Combat engineers with the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division certified on a demolition range at Fort Stewart, Ga., May 4, 2017.
During the three day range, sappers integrated demolitions into their mobility, countermobility and survivability skills; techniques that involved timber cutting, steel charges, shape charges and water impulse charges.
“With the brigade transitioning to an armored brigade, our role as combat engineers will be larger,” said 1st Lt. Martin Mudd, executive officer of Alpha Company, 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. “We’re going to be needed on a larger scale.”
Timber cutting allows the engineers to clear trees for armored vehicles to pass through said Sgt. Michael Frizzell of Alpha Company, 9th Brigade Engineer Company, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. It also creates obstacles for enemy forces.

“Combat engineers are the main effort on breaching.” he said. “We are also trained to work hand in hand with our infantrymen. We blow the door and they clear the room. It’s a team effort.”
Frizell stated that they don’t get to use live explosives often, so conducting this demolition range was a great opportunity to experience realistic hands on training and improve the battalion’s overall combat readiness.
