Hundreds of current and former patients, military and civilian dignitaries, and staff gathered May 10 for the grand opening ceremony that marked Naval Health Clinic Annapolis’ new $43.5 million new clinic. The new facility blends the latest health care technologies with an environmentally sustainable design to keep the more than 14,000 patients—including U.S. Navy Academy’s brigade of midshipman—ready, healthy and on-the-job.
Carter reminisced about the history of Navy Medicine's care of the brigade of midshipmen for the past 110 years.
"This history is now born in this spectacular 101,598 square foot new facility," said Vice Adm. Walter E. “Ted” Carter Jr., Superintendent, United States Naval Academy. "I'm proud to be witness to today's Naval Health Clinic Annapolis grand opening."
The focus of the new 101,500 square foot, state-of-the-art clinic was on blending the latest health care and ancillary service technologies with environmentally sustainable design elements to enhance patient care, improve patient flow, increase access, and advance patient and staff well-being. Among the many enhancements available to patients: a consolidated Musculoskeletal Clinic (brings together physical therapy, orthopedics, podiatry and sports medicine), expanded pharmacy services (an increase from three pharmacy service windows in the old clinic to five in the new clinic) and new Dental Clinic.
There are patient receptions for each care area to enhance the patient check-in process as well as queuing kiosks for pharmacy, immunizations, laboratory and radiology to minimize wait times. And a sun-filled atrium and healing garden deliver an enhanced environment of care.
"Being here today makes me reflect on the pride of our history here in Annapolis," said Rear Adm. Terry Moulton, deputy surgeon general and deputy chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. "Whether in the past or present, we're here to keep the U.S. Navy ready to deal with any challenges we may face."
The new construction has a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification level of Silver in the Green Building System. It features a new solar thermal system with the ability to supply 50 percent of the domestic hot water for the clinic. Conservation and energy generation features will eliminate over 481 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year over the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers baseline.
The annual environmental benefit is estimated to be equivalent to the removal of 92 passenger vehicles the associated reduction of 54,213 gallons of gas consumption. These reductions in energy and greenhouse gas emissions come with a bonus of saving taxpayer dollars.
Plus, the new clinic is conveniently located near military housing, the commissary and Navy Exchange.
“The contributions and investments in the new Naval Health Clinic Annapolis facility underscore our unwavering dedication to the brigade of midshipmen and the U.S. Naval Academy,” said Capt. Michael B. McGinnis, commanding officer, Naval Health Clinic Annapolis. “And now our facility is on par with the expert care that been delivered to the Navy and Marine Corps family for the past 110 years.”
Naval Health Clinic Annapolis first opened its doors at Hospital Point in 1907 and was the oldest military treatment facility in Navy Medicine to continuously care for patients. Hospital Point consistently demonstrates its ability to change with the needs of the time. The building transitioned from a hospital to a clinic in 1979. In 2004, the medical clinic became a health clinic with the integration of dental services.
Naval Health Clinic Annapolis’s team is approximately 400 military, civilian and contract staff. It is optimized in the health and readiness of the brigade of midshipmen, operational forces, and patients at Annapolis, Maryland; the branch health clinics in Philadelphia and Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; and Earle and Lakehurst, New Jersey.
