PORT HUENEME, Calif.—“Never grow up,” were the wise words imparted by Capt. Vincent Chernesky to graduates of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division’s (NSWC PHD) spring 2017 Pre-Engineering Program during a ceremony at the Oxnard Harbor District, May 16.

Chernesky, who is the Chief Engineer at NSWC PHD, further explained the importance of finding a career that you love.

“The person standing before you is a nerd, a sci-fi geek who loved—and continues to enjoy—playing with Legos,” he said. “That joy that you get when you do something you love, is what I hope all of you experience in your future jobs. If it hadn’t been for Legos and clicking that first block into place, I would never have pursued the career I have today; so never grow up.”

Twenty-six students representing nine high schools from Oxnard Union High School District and Ventura Unified High School District graduated from the program after completing 11 weeks learning directly from engineering instructors who work for NSWC PHD, the Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center, and the Engineering Duty Officer School.

Since the beginning of the course, students experienced real-life applications of engineering principles, were exposed to different branches of engineering, and saw first-hand how NSWC PHD engineers support the ships and sailors of the United States Navy.

PEP is a partnership forged with local schools, students, and educators to provide a glimpse of NSWC PHD’s mission and fleet support, with the intention of inspiring Ventura County students to pursue a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-related career.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, students received graduation certificates and letters of recommendation signed by NSWC PHD Commanding Officer, Capt. Steve Murray.

“I hope the program inspires you to move forward in a STEM-related field,” said Chernesky. “We offer this program to better the nation, but hope that we will see you return to us or our industry partners for a job one day. Thank you for completing this program and most importantly—never grow up.”

NSWC PHD is a field activity of NAVSEA and provides the global United States Navy fleet with integration, test and evaluation, life-cycle logistics, and in-service engineering for today’s and tomorrow’s warfare systems. Located at Naval Base Ventura County, Calif., NSWC PHD employs more than 2,200 personnel.
