Ten teams competed in the 2017 Girls Division II Far East Soccer Tournament at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, May 15-18, 2017.
International and Department of Defense Education Activity high school teams from all over Japan made up the four-day, 32-game tournament.
Matthew C. Perry and the International School of the Sacred Heart girls’ soccer teams competed against each other for the championship, with M.C. Perry’s Lady Samurai winning 2-0.
“We got first place by a lot of conditioning, dedicated passing drills, and working on our defense and keeper,” said Tige Tarleton, the head coach of the M.C. Perry girls soccer team. “We practiced two hours minimum and four to five days a week depending on if we traveled.”
Bobbi Hill, an M.C. Perry senior and captain of the Lady Samurai soccer team, said that they had a good feeling about winning the tournament due to their practices.
“We were all motivated individually and as a team,” said Hill. “We all got together, got hyped and we were just ready for this.”
Hill proved this to be true by scoring an unprecedented 16 goals throughout the tournament.
While the players were focused on the tournament, between games they made connections with other players from different schools and had an oppurtunity to make new friends.
“We had some time to talk between games to other people, so I did get to make new friends” said Hill. “A Yokota player and I even talked about where I will be going to college.”
Since the beginning of the season, the team competed in three tournaments and won first place in each of them.
“We did really good from start to end this year,” said Hill.
Hill said she has been on the team for four years and came close every year, but never got to win the Far East Tournament.
“Words can’t even describe how happy I am right now,” said Hill. “This is my last year and we won, so I’m very happy about this.”
Although this was the last time some of the players would step foot on the pitch, they made sure their best was their last.
