The 633rd Air Base Wing Safety Office hosted the Armed Forces Motorcycle Safety event and ride, at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, May 19, 2017.

The event promoted motorcycle safety and met the required annual motorcycle riders’ safety briefing that all service members must complete.

Along with encouraging safety on the road, the event helped to foster esprit de corps among military members and their civilian counterparts, as well as, motorcycle riders from the community.

“It’s a great time to come out and meet other riders,” said Dawn Joyner, 633rd Air Base Wing Safety office safety specialist and motorcycle program manager. “Riders get the chance to form that comradery with one another and learn more about riding safely.”

Whether military riders or civilians, all attendees were required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment throughout the ride, which included: a helmet, goggles or a full-face shield, long sleeved shirt or jacket, long pants and full-fingered gloves. Riders were encouraged to wear clothing constructed of abrasion resistant material such as leather or Kevlar which contains impact absorbing padding.

In addition to the annual ride, participants observed a riding demonstration by the Virginia State Police Motorcycle Unit. The unit also mapped out a motorcycle course with figure-eights and zig-zags in orange safety cones for riders to test out their riding skills.

Along with the Virginia State Police, members of the Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club, helped sponsor the event and performed motorcycle safety checks on all the bikes at the event.

“One of our main focuses is to host safety events like this, as well as, mentor new riders,” Benjamin Park, Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club member. “We show them proper riding habits and safe riding habits to help them integrate into the riding community better.”

Motorcycle riders of all types, from sport bikes to cruisers, can learn their limits and find their comfort zones during these types of safety events, which is incredibly important when riding, said Park.

Regarding motorcycle rider’s welfare, the safety office also provides free motorcycle safety courses throughout the year. There are courses for riders of all skill levels, including Experienced Riders, Advanced Riders and Military Sport Bike Riders Courses.

Motorcycle safety is imperative and lifesaving, not only for two-wheeled riders, but for those who drive cars, trucks and minivans.

While motorcycle riding is encouraged, ensuring service members are riding safely is a priority for the safety office.

“I would encourage anyone to take a motorcycle course through our office as often as you can,” said Joyner. “It’s free and the more training you get, hopefully, the better and safer rider you will be.”
