CARVILLE, La. – Hurricane Gustav's effects were certainly felt in Louisiana, and they were also felt as far north as Kearney, Neb. Nebraska activated its 1195th Transportation Company from Kearney to aid in hurricane relief, even before Gustav hit the Louisiana coast.
Since Gustav's landfall, the 1195th has been hauling food and water to distribution sites in four different cities throughout the state over the past five days. On Sept. 9, 2008, their mission shifted to delivering 11 generators to Cameron Parish and two more to East Baton Rouge Parish.
"This mission is important to us," said Sgt. 1st Class Robert Schwanz, a Gothenburg, Neb., resident. "It is basically one state helping another in need, and it shows that the Guard is family. We all work together to help each other out."
After this mission, no one from the unit knows what they will do next, but one thing is for sure – Nebraska will be there for Louisiana until the end.
