NEW YORK – The U.S. Navy tug-of-war team defeated the U.S. Marines for a seventh consecutive win during the Fox & Friends morning show as part of 2017 Fleet Week New York (FWNY), May 28.
Ensign Jared Smoot, assigned to amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), shared the secret of the Navy’s success.
“We studied tug-of-war videos,” he said, who is a native of Crown Point, Indiana. “What angles and physics worked best [for handling the rope]. It was great to see the fruits of our labor, and see all the time we put in come to fruition.”
Smoot stands at a towering 6-foot-10-inches tall and is clearly a site to see when surrounded by the other average-sized service members, even in comparison to the physical standards of the Marine Corps Body Bearers, which made up four out of the five members of the Marine Corps’ team.
“Body Bearers carry caskets at ceremonial funerals in Arlington cemetery,” said Capt. Evita Mosqueda, from Merced, California and a Marine Corps team member. “They take this training very seriously.”
As the horn signaled the start, the Navy team immediately took control of the rope as cheers and screams resonated by their shipmates and fellow Marines to pull the red ribbon toward their respective side.
In addition to the main event, members of Navy Band Northeast played patriotic tunes and the U.S. Coast Guard Silent Drill Team performed for the cameras. The “Fox & Friends” show hosts even joined in on the fun by donning the role of drill instructors to add an extra element of surprise to the challenge.
FWNY, now in its 29th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
