FORT IRWIN, California - Whenever someone’s vehicle breaks down on the side of the road, they call a reliable towing company for help. Soldiers stuck out in the field have a similar service for support.

At the National Training Center, the U.S. Army's premier combat training facility, located at Fort Irwin, California, there is always something that can render a vehicle inoperable, from simulated anti-vehicle warfare to real equipment malfunctions. The 1175th Transportation Company, Tennessee Army National Guard, is there to provide vehicle recovery support for the 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, Mississippi Army National Guard, during their rotation at NTC.

Soldiers of the 1175th use heavy equipment transporter trucks specifically designed to carry heavy military cargo, to load and transport disabled tanks and armored vehicles to a repair facility so that they can be restored back to mission capable. Hauling the heavy vehicles onto the HET can be hard work when working under the conditions of NTC.

“It’s definitely hard work climbing under these tanks,” said Staff Sgt. Jonathan L. Prince, a motor transport operator with the 1175th. “However, I really enjoy helping.”

Staff Sgt. Matthew D. Slater, a tank commander with the 2d Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment, Kansas Army National Guard, said that it’s great to have the 1175th to come and carry his tank when it’s down.

The 1175th conducts missions across the training area, retrieving disabled vehicles and ensuring that units get their vehicles in the right place, and are committed to offering a towing service for the Soldiers conducting missions at NTC’s training area.

With the support of the 1175th, the 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team is prepared to maintain its combat power while in the training area. The transportation company will be assisting throughout the rotation, which ends in mid-June.
