The Single Marine Program hosted a basketball tournament May 28 aboard Camp Schwab.

Six teams from the local and military communities participated, going head-to-head in a friendly bracket style tournament.

Strengthening the friendship between the communities, the athletes came together to compete in a sport they all understood and enjoyed playing.

"I know there was a language barrier, but you could tell that everyone was here to have fun,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert Nard, president of the SMP on Camp Schwab. “Participating on a local team, we had to learn to communicate without actually talking.”

Even though the games were highly competitive, the athletes laughed and maintained good sportsmanship.

“I think it was awesome, especially the championship game,” said Alex Monteiro, Camp Schwab SMP coordinator. “It was cool to see such strong competition and a close game going into overtime. Everyone played really hard, and seemed to have an amazing time. There was great sportsmanship all-round.”

The final two teams were God Mountains from Nago City and Ammo, a team of Marines with 3rd Supply Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 35, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force. After going into overtime, Ammo came out on top after a last second shot from the 3-point line; the final score was 33-31.

“Sports have the ability to transcend language barriers, and events like this are something everyone can enjoy together,” said Monteiro. “The local and military communities came together to create a fun and rewarding atmosphere. I’m glad the SMP could help facilitate such a great day.”
