FORT STEWART, Ga. -- Soldiers of 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, participated in a Memorial Day ceremony held at the Glennville Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, Ga., May 29, 2017.

The “Can Do” Battalion helped celebrate the solemn holiday by providing a color guard, a firing party that fired a 21-gun salute and the 3rd Infantry Division band.

Maj. Patrick B. Tabin, the operations officer for 3-15 Inf., and keynote speaker said, “The solemnity of Memorial Day is found in the stories of these ordinary Americans who became extraordinary for the most simple of reasons: they loved their country so deeply, so profoundly, that they were willing to give their lives to keep it safe and free.”

Chris Roessler, the Mayor of Glennville, along with local members of Veteran Foreign Wars and the American Legion were also in attendance.

Roessler said that it is important to honor the sacrifice of all veterans, not only in Glennville, but all over the world.

1st Lt. Weston C. Lee of Bluffton, Ga., a U.S. Army Soldier who was killed by an improvised explosive device in Mosul, Iraq in 2016 was one of many Soldiers honored.

Throughout the ceremony, Families of Soldiers buried in the cemetery, placed flowers and an American flag next to their loved ones’ headstones and memorialized their fallen hero.

Tabin said, “Our Soldier’s legacy continues to live on. It lives on in the pride of their parents, in the love of their spouses and in their beautiful children.”

He said Memorial Day is a day of solemn mourning, but it is also a day of reverent celebration--a celebration of men and women who dared all, who gave all, so that we might continue to enjoy the freedoms and benefits of this great nation.
