Bemowo Piskie Training Area--Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or UAV’s, play an important role in combat missions by gathering intelligence and conducting surveillance on enemy forces. The qualified teams designated to operate the UAV train regularly to ensure systems remain intact and their skills do not diminish over time. Battle Group Poland soldiers conducted Training with these systems during joint training exercise PUMA 17 near Bemowo Piskie Training Area May 25.
The battle group soldiers have a great opportunity to work with other nations' to gain a better understanding of their equipment and tactics. U.S. Soldiers use the RAVEN system and the Desert Hawk III system is used by the British troops. Both teams studied how each of their systems ran to better establish interoperability between the battle group forces.
U.S. soldier, Sgt. Jhevdys Rivera said, “Its very important for us to maintain constant surveillance in the area so, having multiple aerial vehicles in the air is very important because we can get feed from the British side and from the American side and we can both be in the air and monitor a wider area of surveillance.”
Each team set up their stations and conducted checks on the systems to prepare them for flight. Each UAV is launched by hand then controlled and monitored from the ground by a team of soldiers. Surveillance was conducted on the Polish soldiers of the 15th Mechanized Brigade who were playing the role of the enemy force during PUMA 17. The objective of the teams was to locate the enemy’s position and gather intelligence about the number of vehicles and personnel they had.
“It’s vital training to see how it would all link together and how we can use all of this information and this UAV technology to give best effect on whatever target we are surveilling and passing the information down to the guys who are on the ground who need the information we are trying to get on the enemy,” said U.K. soldier, Sgt. Daniel Dempster.
Training of this nature is what best establishes interoperability between the troops of Battle Group Poland, said Rivera. He added, "This was the first time our operators were able to conduct simultaneous aerial reconnaissance with our NATO allies. It was a great experience to be able to work with our British counterparts.”
