CENTENNIAL, Colo. – The Colorado National Guard, in conjunction with the West Metro Fire District, will conduct a major emergency response exercise at the West Metro Fire Training Rescue Center in Lakewood, June 3-4.
The two-day exercise will involve multiple realistic scenarios of mass casualty events in which local, civilian authorities will request assistance from the Colorado National Guard.
More than 100 CONG Soldiers and Airmen, first responders, evaluators, and role-players will participate in the exercise involving simulated exposure to contaminated environments, collapsed structures, and medical triage.
The responding Colorado National Guard unit is the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Enhanced Response Force Package. Colorado is one of 17 states that has a CERFP.
“This specialized unit is a tremendous asset to incident commanders in the region,” The Adjutant General of Colorado Maj. Gen. Mike Loh said. “These Colorado National Guard members bring a range of capabilities and can respond quickly and effectively to any catastrophic event.”
A CERFP is a rapidly-deployable National Guard unit capable of providing immediate response capability to a governor for a CBRN incident. CERFP has five primary capabilities: medical, which provides evaluation and triaging for evacuation; decontamination; search and extraction, which searches for victims and extracts them from collapsed structures; communications; and command and control. A CERFP is a joint unit with about 200 Citizen-Soldiers and Citizen-Airmen, most of whom are also assigned to other military units.
