    194th Wing

CAMP MURRAY—Col. Johan Deutscher turned over command of the Washington Air National Guard's 194th Mission Support Group to Col. Larry Hager in a ceremony here on June 1. After two years commanding the Mission Support Group, Deutscher was named the new commander of the Washington Air Guard's 141st Air Refueling Wing based at Fairchild Air Force Base. Hager previously served as the Washington Air Guard J6 joint director of communications. He told Airmen at the change of command ceremony that “preparation and planning will be the key to our success.”

In his remarks, Deutscher reviewed Mission Support Group highlights of the past two years. Among the milestones, the 248th Civil Engineer Flight completed $6 million in projects and planned for significant future projects. The 194th Logistics Readiness Squadron transferred $13 million in assets from the 141st Air Refueling Wing. The 194th Communications Flight made the largest migration of email accounts in Wing history and expanded its personnel from five to 13. The 194th Force Support Squadron earned accolades for its work at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, England. The 194th Security Forces Squadron conducted the first-ever Wing vulnerability assessment and defended Camp Murray during Exercise Cascadia Rising.

Col. Gent Welsh, 194th Wing commander, said that Deutscher is “one of the finest, most capable officers I have ever known.” Deutscher is a “natural leader” and a “master strategic thinker,” he added.

A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Deutscher accumulated more than 2,100 hours in the T-37, T-38, and F-15C. Prior to his service in the 194th Wing, Deutscher was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, and Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base in Oregon. Deutscher came to the Washington Air National Guard in 2013 to serve as deputy commander of the 252nd Cyberspace Operations Group prior to his assignment as commander of the Mission Support Group.

Hager comes to his new role with 33 years of military service. Hager is “the hardest working and most dedicated traditional officer I have ever seen,” said Welsh. Before being commissioned as an officer in 1996, Hager served for twelve years as an enlisted member. He is the first prior-enlisted officer to command the Mission Support Group. Hager began his Guard service in the Minnesota Air National Guard, transferring to the Washington Guard in 2006 and serving as commander of the 256th Combat Communications Squadron from 2007 to 2012 prior to his service in the Washington National Guard Joint Force Headquarters.
