GIZYCKO, Poland--Battle Group Poland U.S., U.K. and Romanian soldiers supported their Polish partners in celebrating the “Day of the Veteran” by participating in a series of events May 27 and 28.

The Polish Veteran's Day, celebrated since 2012, is meant to honor the soldiers, firefighters, Border Guard officers and other uniformed and civilian service members who have performed a mission abroad. The aim of the day is to make the public aware of the problems of veterans and their families, especially those who have been injured while on duty.

Polish Veteran's Day is celebrated with the “International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers” May 28. The holiday honors the men and women who have served in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Macedonia for their courage and professionalism and also honors the memory of those who have fallen for the cause of peace.

Antoni Macierewicz, Minister of National Defence for Poland met with Polish 15th Mechanized Brigade General Jaroslaw Gromadzinski and Lt. Col. Steven Gventer, battle group commander, and their soldiers during a tour of both units' static displays set up at the range near Guadynik May 27. He also handed out medals to recognize the service of a group of veterans.

The day included a shooting competition and Battle Group Poland U.S., U.K. And Romanian teams tried their hand at firing Polish pistols and rifles.

Also on May 27, a Fun Run and Race along the lake was held at the marina in Gizycko. U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Patrick Lucas won overall category for the half-marathon and Romanian 1st Lt. Diaconescu Vlad finished 2nd in the 20-30 years age category.

The second day of the Veteran's Day celebration took place at the main square in Gizycko. Battle Group Poland was given the honor to march and stand with Polish armed forces in a special ceremony and set up a static display of their equipment alongside 15th Mechanized Brigade.

Gromadzinski opened the ceremony by reading a letter from the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, which said (translated from Polish), "We symbolically express our respect for participants in military and war operations, stabilization, peace and humanitarian operations. Having participated in missions in Poland since 1953, we confirm that Poland, as a part of the international community, feels a responsibility for world security issues.”

Deputy Minister of National Defense Bartlomiej Grabski then read a letter from Macierewicz, who stressed that “veterans of foreign missions fully deserve to be remembered and talked about not only on the holiday but every day.”
