Residents, sailors and Marines gathered to witness the relief of U.S Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Darnell Richardson as sergeant major for Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, June 2, 2017.
Sgt. Maj. Darnell Richardson, outbound sergeant major of H&HS, relinquished his duties to Sgt. Maj. Jason R Cain.
“I’m going to remember the Marines, sailors and families the most,” said Richardson. “It’s a small community where everybody knows everybody, and I like to think I was the mayor of Iwakuni because I was that involved with the community. I’ll miss the motivation, esprit de corps and camaraderie.”
Richardson said not only are the Marines with H&HS top notch, but the sailors as well. He mentioned service members winning boards at the Marine Corps Installations Pacific level and having a plethora of enlisted service members and officers take steps to the next level of leadership.
Although bittersweet, Richardson is leaving in comfort knowing the squadron will be in good hands.
“Sgt. Maj. Cain is an awesome sergeant major,” said Richardson. “I’m humble enough to admit that he’s going to take this squadron to the next level. He brings a lot to the table with the wisdom he carries.”
Cain is coming to H&HS from the 4th Tank Battalion, San Diego, where he was the inspector-instructor sergeant major from February 2015 to June 2017.
“I have some big shoes to fill,” said Cain. “From walking around the air station this last week and interacting with Marines, sailors and civilians Sgt. Maj. Richardson played an intricate part in everything that revolves around H&HS. I intend to continue his legacy in leading mentoring and training the next leadership at this command into the future for the Marine Corps.”
Cain said he expects the Marines to perform as they were taught from day one at recruit training. To be disciplined, lead by example and follow orders the Marine Corps sets into place for all Marines.
New to Iwakuni, Cain intends on making the most of his time here.
“I’m enjoying Iwakuni so far,” said Cain. “It’s a new experience. This is the first time I will actually be stationed overseas, and it’s a great opportunity for my teenage kids and wife to experience. I plan to do the best I can by everyone.”
