Service members attended an awards ceremony for the Active-Duty Fund Drive in support of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, June 1, 2017.
The ceremony acknowledged Marines and their contribution to the NMCRS ADFD.
“The awards ceremony recognizes the key persons that really helped make this fund drive successful this year.” said U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Melissa Heisterberg, deputy director of the public affairs office with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron and ADFD coordinator. “We wanted to recognize their diligence, organization and endurance throughout the active-duty fund drive because without their efforts we wouldn’t have been successful.”
Melissa Hornbrook, director of NMCRS, U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Christopher J. Garza, sergeant major of MCAS Iwakuni and U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Kevin A. Campbell, commanding officer of H&HS, gave opening remarks and thanked everyone who participated in the ADFD.
“We can’t do this without a lot of support,” said Campbell. “From command teams that support the NMCRS, all the unit representatives, the overall ADFD coordinator, as well as the NMCRS director and the Marines and sailors that pitched in this year and contributed. This is a little bit of a thank you back to them.”
Awards were given to those who raised the most money for the drive. MCAS Iwakuni was put above all other Marine Corps installations for raising the most money per capita for the NMCRS.
“As a whole, MCAS Iwakuni raised $127,672, which well surpassed our goal of $105,000,” said Campbell. “H&HS Iwakuni contributed over $35,000, and we were the highest overall contributors to this year’s fund drive aboard MCAS Iwakuni.”
The NMCRS is a non-profit organization that runs solely on donations. It gives financial, educational and other need-based assistance to active-duty and retired sailors and Marines and their families.
“Watching the NMCRS work with the community allowed me to see that we are directly benefitting the individuals who live around us,” said Hornbrook. “If a service member has basic living expenses they need help with, need to get back home because a loved one has passed away or trying to get their vehicle fixed they can walk into our office, let us know, we can sit down and go over their finances, and they can leave our office with the finances they need.”
Campbell said the NMCRS provides services that help military members stay mission ready.
“It’s one of the few organizations out there for us and by us that is designed to take care of Navy, Marines, service members and their families,” said Campbell. “Back when my sergeant major was Lance Cpl. Richardson, he was driving his family from one duty station to the next. His car broke down along the way, and he had to check in the next day. He had about $2,200 worth of repairs done to his car so he went to the NMCRS, got the money, fixed his car that day, went on his way and paid the money back over time. That’s the kind of stuff NMCRS does that enables Marines and sailors to get back in the fight and complete their mission.”
