FORT IRWIN, California, - The 106th Support Battalion, headquartered in Monticello, Mississippi, is at the National Training Center to practice what they will be called to do if deployed to a combat theater: sustain the force.
They are part of the 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, Mississippi Army National Guard, and are at Fort Irwin May 18 - June 15 for realistic combat training along with over 40 supporting Army and Air Force units from around the U.S., which means a lot of mouths to feed and vehicles to keep moving.
The 106th is a logistics unit that distributes large amounts of supplies including water, food, fuel and repair parts to the forward maneuver and support units, said Maj. Anthony Cannon, the support operations officer for the 106th.
"We are dealing with all logistical supplies from ice to water, to class one which is your rations,” said Cannon. “We look at it as a one-stop-shop to get all of your commodities.”
Company A distributes supplies by setting up a supply support area where units pick up supplies, or form logistical packages, LOGPAC’s, that carry supplies to the forward sustainment companies, said Capt. Veronica Peppers, the company commander.
Without support units like the 106th, the maneuver units that make up the 155th ABCT would have a hard time keeping their Soldiers and equipment moving forward.
"We sustain the force,” said Peppers. "It’s critical that we get those supplies downrange.”
At the end of the tough training they are experiencing at NTC, the Soldiers hope to take home some lessons learned and best practices.
"NTC has been very beneficial to the training of my staff, and to the soldiers,” said Cannon. "It helps connect the puzzle of how everything is supposed to interlock."
"I also think it’s been beneficial for developing leaders,” said Cannon. "It lets the Soldiers prefect their craft."
The 106th will be pushing supplies the units of the 155th ABCT until the end of the rotation, which concludes field training with live fire ranges, and then moves to cleaning and loading equipment to return home.
