Yoiko Child Development Center celebrated Read Across America with a “Green Eggs & Ham” themed breakfast at Misawa Air Base, March 2.

The event was part of the CDC’s spirit week that encouraged children to wear specific attire each day including pajamas, Cat in the Hat, mismatched outfits, something green and a Dr. Seuss inspired costume.

Read Across America is an annual reading, motivation and awareness program created by the National Education Association group. The dedicated day for the celebration is March 2— the birthday of the well-known children’s author, Dr. Seuss. The purpose of Read Across America is to bring excitement to reading for children of all ages.

“The CDC helps develop literacy and language on a daily basis,” said Deborah Barron, the CDC director. “We regularly read one-on-one or in small groups and encourage the children to re-tell and re-enact events in story books. Reading to young children is valuable in providing groundwork for later literacy.”
