FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – Soldiers from the 252nd Quartermaster Company, 728th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 213th Regional Support Group, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, conducted hand-grenade training here June 10, 2017.
All Soldiers are required to be skilled in basic Soldier tasks.
“Regardless of MOS, it’s train as we fight,” said Sgt. Lisa Horan, a water purification specialist with 252nd Quartermaster Company. “It’s better to get out here and do this type of training hands on,” she added.
The Soldiers spent two days on the hand-grenade range learning proper grenade handling procedures.
“Yesterday we practiced distance and accuracy with the grenades,” said Spc. Taajudeen Cousins, a unit supply specialist with 252nd Quartermaster Company. “Today we’re doing the same to make sure we all remain safe while we’re in training,” he continued.
Each Soldier with in the unit threw a practice grenade, which housed a charge no larger than a fire cracker, to familiarize themselves with the technique.
“We practiced positioning, proper handling of the grenade and then we moved up to the range and did some live fire grenades,” said Cousins.
Horan stressed the refresher training helped increase the safety of the Soldiers by giving them hands on knowledge.
“Safety first,” she said. “We want to make sure everyone’s comfortable and that they know all the steps before pulling the pin and that they’re fully trained before they go out there and it’s live.”
After going through another round of refresher training, the Soldiers moved to the grenade range, where they threw live grenades at simulated targets.
“This is great training,” said Cousins, who calls Philadelphia home. “I haven’t thrown a grenade since my first year in the Army, during basic training,” he continued.
Horan, who lives in Boiling Springs, said the training provided the Soldiers with valuable experience.
“In a live tactical environment anyone could end having grenades to use against the enemy; It’s better to get out here and do this type of training hands,” said Horan. “It also motivates the Soldiers,” she said.
The unit plans to continue Soldier skills training by conducting gas chamber and crew served weapons training during their last week of annual training.
