In September 2016, the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Air Force introduced several new diversity and inclusion initiatives designed to develop and retain talent, skills and expertise within the Air Force in new and creative ways.
One of these initiatives called for a way to provide female Airmen more time to decide on balancing a career with a new child.
Effective Apr. 26, in addition to allowing for voluntary separation for pregnancy before the birth of a child, Airmen will now be able to apply for separation after the birth of a child. Policies regarding medical care for those separating prior to birth of a child remain in accordance with existing separation Air Force Instructions.
Pregnancy Separation
The revised policy states female Airmen may apply for a separation date prior to the birth of a child. If the request for separation is prior to the birth, the separation date will be before the birth.
If stationed in the continental United States, requested date of separation is no earlier than 90 days and not later than 30 days prior to the expected date of delivery. If stationed outside the continental U.S., the requested separation date must be prior to the 25th week of pregnancy, due to travel restrictions.
Childbirth Separation
The revised policy also states female Airmen may apply for a separation date after the birth of a child. The application must be submitted no later than 12 months after childbirth and the requested date of separation must not be more than 12 months from the date of application.
If the request for separation occurs after the birth of a child, the earliest date of separation must be the day following return to duty from maternity leave. Airmen must return from maternity leave before they can separate.
This policy is not retroactive; however, female Airmen who delivered a child on or after Apr. 26, 2016, are eligible to apply for separation up until 12 months after childbirth under this provision. This policy does not apply to adoptive parents.
Airmen may apply for separation via vMPF. Requests for pregnancy and childbirth separation are evaluated on their individual merits and may be disapproved if not determined to be in the best interest of the Air Force.
