BEMOWO PISKIE, Poland- Once the defensive phase line troops retrograded to the north following an attack from a platoon of Polish BMPs, who represented the opposing force, the Enhance Forward Presence Battle Group devised a strategy to conduct a counter-attack to seize a designated objective during a training exercise at Bemowo Piskie Training Area, near Orzysz, Poland, June 15, 2017.
The U.S. Army Europe-led Exercise Saber Strike 17 spans across the Baltics and Poland integrating the multinational NATO Battle Groups to showcase deterrence capabilities and ensure that Allied forces can work together as a collective team to bolster the overall security of the region.
The multinational FTX stressed each participating nation on mission command and improved interoperability amongst NATO Allies and partners.
Each phase of the exercise incorporated every facet of the multinational battle group, to include National Guard assets from the State Partnership Program, to increase the effectiveness of battle group.
“Training with the British and Romanian Soldiers on a daily basis increases the interoperability of the battle group,” said 1st Lt. John Kelemen, Infantry Officer, 2nd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment. “We brought both nations into our tactical operations center so we can cross communicate on multiple echelons throughout the training scenario.”
Having multinational units train in a decisive action focused, battalion-level training exercises that mimics real life situations showcases that the eFP Battle Group is an Allied, forward deployed defense and deterrence postured force throughout Eastern Europe to reassure NATO’s eastern member nations of the commitment to keeping the region secure and stable.
Each participating nation had the chance to build on their individual capabilities that adds to the collective whole of the battle group throughout the duration of the FTX. Executing a training exercise with NATO Allies and partners here in Poland provides unique opportunities to further develop each country’s skills and improve the ability to operate as a combined arms team.
“I think we managed to do very well during this exercise,” said Romanian Capt. Andrei Nistor, Deputy Commander, Air Defense Battery, Blue Scorpions. “We covered the entire Battle Group and we managed to keep the ground troops out of danger when referring to air defense.”
The Romanian commander also discussed how important it is for his country to be a part of Battle Group Poland and the benefits that come with working alongside different nations.
“It’s very important to us as a battery that we get to participate in a multinational environment,” he said. “We have worked in a multinational environment before but only in Romania. Right now we’re attached to a NATO Battle Group under U.S. command, which is very interesting and a good experience to learn new things.”
Getting the chance to prove that we can effectively contribute air defense capabilities to the battle group is a priority for our battery, Nistor added.
During the afternoon of day three, the battle group executed a combined counter attack against a mechanized force to regain the initiative and seize pieces of key terrain. Once the troops maneuvered south to the objective, the attack was quick and decisive resulting in friendly forces controlling the objective once held by the opposing force and the battle group ready for follow on missions.
