CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – More than 1,000 U.S. service members and civilians walked or ran a 5K to show their support of the U.S. Army’s 242nd birthday.
Area Support Group-Kuwait hosted this annual run in commemoration of the World War 1 Centennial, June 14, at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. The 5K started off the day’s events, which was followed with various organization’s command staff and youngest service member cutting an Army birthday cake.
“Hosting the 5K run helps us step back from our unit missions and remember the sacrifices of those before us,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Walter Wearbon, equal opportunity advisor, ASG-Ku. “Events like this bring up morale and meet our readiness strategies, ensuring to all that we stand ready to engage and destroy the enemies of the United States.”
Many of the service members and civilians agreed with Wearbon’s assessment of the event. For several of them, this was their first competitive walk or run during their deployment.
“I felt that I accomplished a lot today,” said U.S. Army Pfc. Eric Brannic, combat medic, 86th Combat Support Hospital. “I was faster than the last 5K race I participated in, finishing 1st overall.”
Agreeing with Brannic is Maj. Ashley Hall, also from the 86th Combat Support Hospital, who finished 1st among all female contestants.
“One of my top goals, while in theater, is to get fit and healthy,” said Hall, medical logistics officer, 86th CSH. “Today’s race was a benchmark for me to which I plan to build on it, improving each time before I leave.”
ASG-Ku senior enlisted adviser Command Sgt. Maj. Scott Anderson and youngest enlisted Soldier Pvt. Timpsett Council, ended the birthday celebrations with a traditional cake cutting at the Zone 2 Dining Facility. U.S. Army Col. Joseph Power IV, ASG-Ku commander, also took part in the tradition.
“It was an honor cutting the birthday cake, especially since my first-year anniversary in the Army is coming up,” said Pvt. Timpsett Council, finance management technician, ASG-Ku. “I just completed advanced individual training in January and am enjoying every moment of being in the Army and over here.”
