    12th Flying Training Wing

    The 479th Flying Training Group welcomed its new commander, Col. Charles McElvaine, during a change of command ceremony June 30 in the National Naval Aviation Museum at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.

    The ceremony marks the formal transfer of command authority and was performed in front of members of the unit in keeping with tradition.

    Col. Joel Carey, 12th Flying Training Wing commander, presided over the ceremony which included a formation of the 479th FTG’s four squadrons. The 12th FTW is headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas and is the 479th's higher headquarters within the Air Education Training Command.

    Carey presented Col. John Edwards with the Legion of Merit for his accomplishments while assigned as the 479th FTG commander. Edwards will become the 28th Bomb Wing commander at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D.

    With the traditional passing of the unit's flag, Edwards relinquished command to Carey. Carey then presented McElvaine the 479th's flag to complete the ceremony and tradition .

    McElvaine’s recent assignments include serving as a student at the National War College, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., and as the chief of Nuclear Operations Division, J-33, Joint Staff, Pentagon, Washington D.C.
