TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (July 15, 2017) – The 83rd Troop Command held a traditional ceremony of bidding farewell to its outgoing commander and welcoming the new commander at its headquarters in Tallahassee, today.
Colonel George V. Brown, who currently serves as the full-time G1, Director of Military Personnel, for the Florida National Guard, replaced outgoing commander Brig. Gen. Paul B. Chauncey, III as the commander with a portfolio of the most diversified subordinate units in the Florida Army National Guard, overseeing more than 1,800 assigned Soldiers.
“Having been in subordinate positions in the 83rd, I never had an appreciation for its complexity,” said Chauncey. “If we all simply did our jobs, we’d fail. It’s the wherewithal of the Soldiers in the command to go above and beyond that makes this command successful.”
The 83rd TC has a peacetime mission to exercise command and control of 10 highly skilled organizations to ensure their readiness for contingency operations. Those units are the Special Operations Detachment-Central; the 3rd, 20th Special Forces Group; the 1st Battalion, 111th Aviation Regiment; the 779th Engineer Battalion; the 146th Expeditionary Signal Battalion; the 2-111th Aviation Operations Battalion; the 44th and 48th Civil Support Teams; the 107th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment and the 221st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company.
The presiding officer was Maj. Gen. Michael A. Calhoun, the Adjutant General, Florida National Guard, who shared his thoughts on the accomplishments of the 83rd TC while under Chauncey’s command.
“A little over three years ago, I had the distinct privilege of commanding this great organization, so I know how difficult it is for General Chauncey to concede command of these outstanding Soldiers,” said Calhoun. “Under his leadership, the 83rd Troop Command mobilized, deployed, redeployed and reintegrated over 600 Soldiers.”
Chauncey, who held his post for the past three years, has been assigned to Camp Blanding Joint Training Center, Starke, Florida to lead the Training Installations and Programs (TIP) as the M-Day Assistant Adjutant General. At the end of the ceremony, the Adjutant General awarded him with the Legion of Merit in honor of his superior service and leadership.
The 83rd TC will now be led by Brown, who has over 29 years of distinguished service to the Florida Army National Guard.
“I’m truly honored by this selection and I’m humbled by it,” said Brown.
Brown will carry on the tradition of emphasizing safety and optimizing training. His leadership philosophy includes the importance of strong leadership, along with mental, emotional and physical toughness – traits demanded of today’s citizen Soldiers for tomorrow’s complex and evolving peacetime and operational missions.
“The Troop Command is a diverse team,” said Brown. “My goal is to enable them to stay trained, ready and available for deployment.”
As Brown gave his final words of encouragement and direction for the way ahead, family and friends attending applauded as they witnessed the long line of Soldiers and leaders participating in the honor of another changing of the guard.
“Love what you do and do what you love,” Brown said. “We all volunteered for this; let’s have fun doing it.”
