ENOGGERA, Australia— Member’s of America’s First Corps Army Band performed for students of McDowall State School during Talisman Saber, July 18.

“We’re telling them about what our militaries are doing, and the partnership between our two countries,” said Sgt. 1st Class Todd Borges, music performance team leader, America’s First Corps Army Band.

More than 350 students attended the performance, which is about half the school.

“If they can see people who have learned it and mastered it, and perform on a regular basis, and that can play it well, that is what they can aspire to,” said Bruce Fogarty, principal of McDowall State School.

The school has a close relationship with the Australian Defence forces, as about 10% of their students come from military families. Fogarty originally contacted the Australian Royal Artillery Regiment to set up the band’s performance. The Australian Royal Artillery Regiment is hosting and supporting America’s First Corps Army Band during Talisman Saber 17.

“Our job as military is to put a face to the American warfighter,” said Sgt. Mark Koehl, a senior army musician with America’s First Corps Army Band. “We get to go out and actually shake people’s hands.”

The performance also allowed for the band members to share some of their personal story with the children. Each band member would introduce themselves, and their hometown prior to performing a musical piece.

Borges began playing music around the same age as the children he performed for. He finds music to be a not only to be an enjoyable way to share his army story, but also an activity that can benefit students overall in their academic journey.

“Music is a really great team building activity,” said Borges. ”It reinforces what they learn in school, arithmetic, reading, writing, and communication.”
