On his first visit to Redstone Arsenal as Vice Chief of Staff of the Army Aug. 3, Gen. James McConville said the workforce here is meeting the mission to support the warfighter.
“The commanders are very focused on innovative ways to support and sustain our Soldiers,” said McConville, who assumed duties as the 36th VCSA June 16. “The workforce is doing incredible things from research and development, to how we are going to sustain and improve our platforms.”
The Army’s second-highest uniformed leader visited several organizations on Redstone during his 2-day visit, including Army Materiel Command, Space and Missile Defense Command, Program Executive Office Aviation, and Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center.
AMC Commander Gen. Gus Perna highlighted top initiatives, from linking the Army’s Organic Industrial Base to the Sustainable Readiness Model, to increasing unit on-hand equipment readiness rates through improved management of the supply chain.
“Army Materiel Command is focused on providing materiel readiness in support of the Chief of Staff of the Army’s priorities and Combatant Commanders’ requirements,” Perna said. “AMC is the Army’s materiel integrator.”
At SMDC, McConville learned about the command’s work in the space and missile defense domains, and as the Army Service Component Command to U.S. Strategic Command. Tours of AMRDEC and PEO Aviation highlighted the organizations’ efforts to develop and deliver missile and aviation platforms that fly faster, farther and with increased payload, all while offering greater protection.
“The Army’s number one priority is readiness, and the commanders and workforce here clearly understand that,” he said. “They are getting our Soldiers what they need and supporting the warfighter.”
Neither the workforce, nor the work done at Redstone, were unfamiliar to McConville – a senior Army aviator and former Army deputy chief of staff for personnel, G-1.
“This workforce here is doing a tremendous job supporting our Soldiers,” he said.
